Why do studies on insulin-like growth factors (IGFs) and IGF signaling seem so contradictory? The answer is "It depends". This mini-review will explore a few of the factors that are likely to contribute to a seemingly confusing message. Most of the evidence comes from experimental animal models. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd.
