摘要
Liver cirrhosis, the end stage of all chronic liver diseases is one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The literature on the topic does not provide much information on the prevalence and incidence of cirrhosis of the liver. However, it is estimated that 0.1% of the European population is suffering from advanced chronic liver disease, with a prevalence of 14-26 new cases/100,000 inhabitants/year, associated with a death rate of 170,000/year (1-3). Over the last 30 years, mortality has dropped in most of the chronic diseases (cardiovascular, metabolic, pulmonary diseases and even cancer); only chronic liver disease has an ascending mortality trend is (4). According to the Baveno VI Consensus the issue highlights the therapeutic methods of variceal bleeding, the most dramatic consequence of portal hypertension.
