Crossrail is a project to build a new railway system to provide, for the first time, a connection between the South-East and the South-West railway networks through the centre of London. The Crossrail route will run from Maidenhead and Heathrow in the west through 21 km long twin tunnels under central London - connecting key central London stations and out to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east. This article aims to describe the design of the underground stations, shafts and tunnels in the heart of London under sensitive building development, rail and tube infrastructure, underground structures and utilities. A wide range of ground mitigation measures are planned to be used. Mott MacDonald designed the underground stations, shafts and tunnels in the central London area at the Scheme Design and is currently responsible for the Detailed Design of all Sprayed Concrete Linings (SCL) structures. This includes station tunnels at the five underground stations - Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon, Liverpool Street and Whitechapel, three crossover structures, shafts and cross passages between running tunnels. The Sprayed Concrete Linings will act as both the immediate and permanent ground support structure.
