Time-dependent surface-index change in ion-exchanged waveguides

摘要
We present experimental evidence that the surface-index change (Delta n) in Ag+/Na+ exchanged waveguides increases with diffusion time. The final value, which is 10-15% larger than the initial value, is reached almost exponentially, with a characteristic time of 30-60 minutes, depending on substrate and melt concentration. Moreover, this change in Delta n is accompanied by a change in the ratio of the self-diffusion coefficients of the two ions, probably caused by the double-alkali effect.
