摘要
The transport layer's primary role is to provide end-to-end communications service between two or more applications running on different hosts. Yet some applications already require greater functionality than what either transmission control protocol (TCP) or user datagram protocol (UDP) has to offer, and future applications might require even more. To extend transport layer functionality, the Internet Engineering Task Force approved the stream control transmission protocol (SCTP). Unlike TCP, SCTP can benefit applications that require reliable deliver and fast processing of multiple, unrelated data streams.
