Surface acoustic waves in materials science

摘要
The use of surface acoustic waves (SAW) in material sciences, to study material properties from linear to elastic behavior to fracture, is discussed. It is observed that the broadband elastic surface solitons can be studied using laser-induced nonlinear SAW pulses. The analysis shows that with laser-excited nonlinear SAW pulses, steep shocks can be generated with stresses that exceeds the mechanical strength of covalent brittle materials such as silicon.
