A new approach to hardening of Al-Fe alloys

摘要
The equilibrium solubility of iron in the aluminum lattice is very low even at high temperatures, and these alloys cannot be dispersion-strengthened with the use of conventional solid state heat treatments. In the present work, the severe plastic deformation approach was used to refine the microstructure to a submicrocrystalline level and extend the iron solubility in aluminum-iron alloys containing 7.5, 11, and 16 wt.% Fe. This allowed aging, which resulted in a very high microhardness. The effect of aging time and temperature on the microhardness of the Al-11%Fe alloy is reported.
