At the heart of the chemical and process industries lies reaction engineering, where great benefits, both financial and environmental, can be realised in the development of new processes. With the shift towards high value speciality chemicals comes expensive and often hazardous downstream processing, which can drastically increase a product's cost. Cleaner synthesis has therefore come to the forefront of research and development, to decrease not only the cost of such processes, but also the environmental risk associated with them. Here we combine three technologies, phase-transfer catalysis, membrane reactors, and electrochemistry to provide a clean, simple method for the synthesis of fine chemicals.
