I provide a background of various spin representations and a motivation for the use of Majorana fermions as a spin representation. Mean-field theories based on the Majorana transformation are applied to the 1D Ising model and a phase transition into a "Majorana dimerised" state with k(B)T(c) - J/4 is discussed. This transition has T-c half that of the magnetic transition found by standard spin mean-field theories.
