Pain management in cardiothoracic practice

Pain management in cardiothoracic practice is a constantly changing field because of the advances in surgical practice. A multimodal approach to analgesia for major surgery permits the use of potent analgesic modalities while minimizing the corresponding side effects. Less invasive surgery in thoracic (VATS) and cardiac (MIDCAB) practice have changed the traditional approach to postoperative pain control. This article discusses the impact of surgical technique on pain management, and gives a broad review of the different pain management strategies available.
