A comparative study of the environmental durability of thermoplastic composites

This study examines the environmental resistance of emerging thermoplastic composites that are under consideration for aerospace applications. A tensile coupon with a biased +/-45degrees orientation was selected to examine the matrix response under static, creep and fatigue loading in five fluids common to the aerospace industry. Weight gain, residual strength, fatigue life and stiffness loss of the thermoplastic coupons were compared with a thermoset composite. In general, the thermoplastic composites did not exceed the environmental durability of the thermoset. The semi-crystalline PPS thermoplastic composite performed nearly as well as the thermoset, while the amorphous PEI exhibited severe degradation in the more aggressive environments. Applied stress during sorption (immersed creep) was also observed to increase degradation beyond that occurring for sorption and creep loading separately.
