The characteristic parameters of lightning electromagnetic pulse field (LEMP), such as peak values, time derivatives, power flow and energy density, are essential for LEMP shielding and remote sensing. In this paper, an novel approach based on finite difference time-domain (FDTD) method is demonstrated. For this new method avoids huge amount of storage when computing the distribution of LEMP in large range, it can get their spatial distribution fast and conveniently. The LEMP and its characteristic parameters at each cells in the entire space are calculated by this approach and are illustrated with groups of plots. Moreover, the algorithm employed has been verified and compared with the published experiment data.
