GOVERNANCE AND RELIGIOUS FREEDOM IN UNIVERSAL INTERNATIONAL LAW, THE EUROPEAN UNION, THE COUNCIL OF EUROPE AND LATIN AMERICA

This paper studies religious freedom in Universal International Law, in the European Union, the Council of Europe and Latin America. First, the relationship between governance and human rights is analyzed. In addition, the regulation of religious freedom in the Declarations of universal international law is studied. Thirdly, religious freedom in the European Union is examined, with special reference to the Court of Justice of the European Union. Fourthly, the paper deals with religious freedom in the Council of Europe and with the European Court of Human Rights case law. Fifthly, religious freedom in Latin America is studied. On this last issue, the Organization of American States, the laws of religious freedom and the agreements with the confessions, which exist in some States, are examined. Finally, some conclusory remarks are added.
