摘要
In recent years more and more independent self-contained emergency departments for all patients with acute medical problems were established in Austria, Germany and Switzerland. The aim of this review is to discuss the necessity of critical care competency in the emergency department, considering the international literature. The emergency department is the first contact point for often critically ill patients in need of immediate critical care treatment. Early care treatment in the emergency department can improve outcome in various critical situations and has economical effects by decreasing the length of stay and need for admission in the intensive care unit or hospital. Critical care competency in the emergency department is necessary, can improve outcome and has a positive economical impact on intensive care units and the entire hospital.
