摘要
This article continues a clinical vignette that describes the progression of a patient from an acute myocardial infarction, complicated by cardiac arrest, through subsequent cardiogenic shock refractory to traditional management strategies. The patient requires escalating levels of support and ultimately durable surgical intervention. It identifies currently available support devices and describes advantages and disadvantages of each. The basic tenets of cardiac surgery, cardiopulmonary bypass, and postoperative care of the cardiac surgery patient are reviewed.
