Nature's Defiance in Lessing's "A Sunrise on the Veld"

This thesis is an ecocritical analysis of Doris Lessing's short story "A Sunrise on the Veld." It points out that this story displays nature's defiance to man's power through analyzing its contents and the narrative skills the story adopts. Revelation of nature's defiant power is presented in this story at two levels, with the contents unfolding nature's resistance to man's control and with skills of focalization and open ending alluding to nature's defiance to man's imposition of meaning. Collaboration between contents and narrative skills serves to highlight the message delivered in the story that nature is an independent existence not subject to man's control.
