摘要
Reconfigurable slit-masks are used with sensor arrays to observe and measure spectra of stars. In space-based applications, such as the James Webb telescope, or ground-based applications where detectors are operated at low temperatures, a reconfigurable slit-mask system must be capable of operating at cryogenic temperatures while generating a small additional heat load. A proposed design consists of a series of small electromagnetic clamps and piezoelectric actuators, and a single prototype has been manufactured. This work focuses on the development of a test apparatus for experiments characterizing various components of the slit-mask device as well as preliminary results from those experiments. Development focused on the cryostat used for the experiments as well as the performance of the electromagnetic apparatus for measuring clamping force. Results outline the final designs for apparatus components as well as preliminary results of a nickel iron alloy electromagnetic clamp.
