Kondo effect in quantum dots with two orbitals and spin 1/2 - Crossover from SU(4) to SU(2) symmetry

Kondo effect is theoretically studied in quantum dots with two orbitals and spin 1/2. We evaluate the Kondo temperature T-K as a function of energy difference A between the orbitals using the scaling method. We find that T-K is maximal around the degeneracy point (Delta = 0) and decreases with increasing vertical bar Delta vertical bar by a power law. This behavior of T-K is understood as a crossover from SU(4) to SU(2) Kondo effect. The calculated results agree with recent experimental results.
