The Nernst spin effect in a two-dimensional electron gas

The response of two-dimensional conduction electrons with spin-orbit coupling to a thermal perturbation is studied using the method of nonequilibrium statistical operator. It is shown that in this case, a spin current orthogonal to the direction of the temperature gradient is generated in the system of two-dimensional electrons. Expressions for the spin-Hall conductivity are derived with electron scattering taken into account. (C) 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.
