摘要
A metaphor, which is normally taken as figure of speech, is a way of thinking and the outcome of the cognition of the world. The essence of a metaphor is conceptual, and the translation and understanding of a metaphor should rely on the social cultural background in which they are developed. From the perspective of conceptual metaphor theory, this paper, taking the two full English versions of Chin P'ing Mei, a Chinese literary classic, as examples, compares and analyzes the translation strategies of conceptual metaphors, especially those involving cultural factors, so as to explore the instructive significance of conceptual metaphor theory on the literary translation.
