摘要
Translation theorists and scholars generally believe that translation is not only a language transfer but a way of cultural communication. When translating film subtitles, a translator should take the cultural elements involved in the film into consideration, and adopt flexible strategies to make the target language audience better understand the content as well as the culture the film conveys. This paper cites examples from some Chinese films translated by Linda Jaivine to illustrate the importance of focusing on cultural elements in dealing with film subtitle translation, and demonstrate it is even more important for a translator to know two cultures well than to master the two languages.
