γ′ formation in superalloy U720LI

Nickel alloys were used to evaluate the microstructure and phases present after various heat treatments of superalloys. γ′ Phase in the nickel-based superalloys (U720LI) nucleated into various morphologies depending on thermal processing conditions. The size of precipitated γ′ in the alloy was controlled largely by solution heat treatment cooling rate. The γ′ precipitation in the alloy was defined in terms of continuous cooling transformation kinetics. The grain boundary γ′ formation controlled the grain boundary morphology in the alloy from fine serrations, to coarse serrations, to large amplitude, jig-saw puzzle-type morphologies.
