The effect of powder bed on the liquid phase sintering of α-SiC

摘要
SiC ceramics were sintered in the temperature range of 1680-1880 degrees C ( at 40 degrees C intervals) with and without powder bed to study the effect of powder bed on the densification process of liquid phase sintered SiC ceramics. The powder bed was found to play significant roles in inhibiting volatilization, reducing weight loss and keeping the microstructure uniform. Samples sintered with powder bed had relatively higher densification rate, higher mechanical properties and more uniform microstructure. There were two critical working temperature ranges for the powder bed. One was promoting efficient sintering during 1720 - 1800 degrees C. The other was inhibiting volatilization and achieving the final full density above 1840 degrees C. (c) 2014 Published by Elsevier Ltd.
