SNARC, SCARC, SMARC and SPARC. Are there non-spatial magnitudes?

In this commentary I muse about the currently exploding literature on associations between the left and right side of space and magnitudes which, on a phenomenal level, do not have any spatial dimension. Numbers, musical pitch and temporal duration are among these magnitudes, but even more abstract concepts such as religiousness and political orientation may have some analog representation. Inferior parietal cortex plays an important role in the mediation of both space and magnitude information. However, the space-quantity associations discussed here are not entirely hardwired, but critically shaped by cultural factors. Thus, investigations of the spatial characteristics of non-spatial magnitudes may hold the key to an understanding oft he convergence zones between neural substrate and culture.
