摘要
Suicide in men is a global public health problem with complex etiologies. Numerous risk factors have been identified for suicide, with the most commonly cited being depression. Primary care physicians are well placed to help combat high suicide rates in men. They are often the first point of contact, provide continuity of care, are available in times of crisis, and have prior knowledge of the patient and local community. Many patients who commit suicide visit their primary care physician in the period immediately before death. This article aims to help primary care physicians minimize male suicide risk through better understanding of male suicidal behavior, active management of depression, and thorough assessment of suicide risk.
