Ten years ago it became a formal objective of the European Union to transform itself into an "Area of Freedom, Security and Justice". As the second five-year programme to turn that objective into reality nears its end, this article surveys the Area's criminal law dimension in the context of broader trends and the prospect of future developments in this sensitive area of integration.
