There is a "knee-jerk" reaction by many state highway officials an city traffic engineers to on-street angle parking-"no way-no where"-yet there are many existing low-volume streets with angle parking that are operating well within acceptable safety limits with low accident rates. With the struggle to revitalize traditional downtowns, there is a need to provide more convenient on-street parking in retail districts to support economic restructuring. In this feature, the first in a series on parking, the author summarizes the reasons why one should consider changing parallel on-street parking to angle on-street parking and the traffic and parking conditions under which such a change can be made.
