Synthesis of Polyvinyl Alcohol-Zinc Oxide Composite by Mechanical Milling: Thermal and Infrared Studies

Composites of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) filled with zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles were synthesized in a ball mill machine. Analysis of the milling products was performed by X-ray diffraction. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed that three factors control the thermal stability of this polymer: (1) temperature dependence, (2) heating rate, and (3) ZnO doping percentage. Upon differential thermal analysis, the polymer-ZnO composites exhibited a distinct decomposition behavior from the undoped PVA. The delta of enthalpy of the complex degradation was obviously larger than that of the pure PVA, indicating that the degradation was accompanied by the release of polymer-ZnO links. The observed changes in the infrared spectral features of the composites confirmed specific interactions in the filled polymer matrices.
