The synthesis of the pyranonaphthoquinone antibiotic pentalongin was performed using the phthalide annulation strategy. Annulation of the cyanophthialide onto 6H-pyran-3-one resulted in a hongconin analogue, which Upon further elaboration was converted into the natural product.
