摘要
Thorium-229 is a valuable, but scarce, radionuclide for nuclear clock applications or targeted alpha therapy. While it is mostly produced by the decay of U-233, Th-229 can also be produced by neutron irradiation of Ra-226. At SCK center dot CEN, capsules containing mainly Th-228 (by-product of Ra-226 irradiation) were characterized to quantify the present amounts of Th-229, Th-228, Ac-227, Ra-226 with high resolution gamma spectroscopy, after a decay period of 40 years in which Th-228 has decayed, High purity Th-229 was quantified, and after recovery using radiochemical separation processes, it can be used to support ongoing research.
