Designer drugs in the general hospital

A more accurate term for designer drugs is club drugs or party drugs, since they are used most frequently in the context of large parties such as raves or circuit parties. Ketamine, methamphetamine, ecstacy or MDMA, and GHB are the drugs that are the focus of this article. Clinicians have become aware of the potential for severe toxic reactions, especially when multiple drugs are used in unregulated, poorly ventilated venues. Of particular concern is a potentially life-threatening withdrawal syndrome associated with GHB. The background, effects, and management of reactions to the club drugs are discussed.
