These five manuscripts provide a snapshot of the research typically published in CANS, delivering quality contributions on cuttingedge technical problems. We hope this type of effort will continue, with future Special Sections based on CANS events. Given our focus on quality, captured via the CANS 2018 review process, there is no strong thematic connection. Nevertheless, we are confident the readers will enjoy the papers in this Special Section. © The Institution of Engineering and Technology 2020.
