MIMO Radar has been proposed as a technique for improving the Minimum Detectable Velocity (MDV) performance of airborne radar systems. However, the increased pulse repetition frequency associated with waveform multiplexing techniques used in GMTI MIMO Radar increases the amount of range ambiguous clutter the radar must suppress, reducing the amount of clutter-free Doppler space available to detect targets and often degrading MDV performance. This paper evaluates this effect and quantifies the conditions where MIMO radar is advantageous, and those where it is not. Results show that this form of MIMO radar is often a disadvantage at higher operating frequencies.
