The application of an innovative partial discharge (PD) deletion and analysis approach to the diagnosis of high voltage (HV) cable systems are discussed. Partial discharge (PD) measurements can detect local defects in the electrical insulation of equipment such as power cables. The technique is to apply a time-frequency transformation and fuzzy logic to each pulse, which results in the formation of clusters from pulses of different sources. The clusters are then identified as external noise PD along surfaces of electrical trees or corona. After-laying and diagnostic tests on XLPE transmission cable systems identify defects in joints such as improper installation and the presence of an electrical tree from a void in the insulation. The combination of separation and identification leads to improved reliability of PD evaluation and provides information that can be exploited to enhance maintenance procedure.
