Evaluation of a rapid immunochromatographic test as an aid to tetanus prophylaxis in the Emergency Department

Introduction. - Preventing tetanus performed in emergency department is not optimal when based on history. In 2005 appeared an immunochromatographic rapid test (TQS), which allows a semiquantitative determination of tetanus antibodies. Objectives. - To perform a validity study of the test and to compare its performance with the performance of clinical history. Methods. - In a prospective double-blind study, we have tested the accuracy of the test and compared its performance with the performance of clinical history. The measure of the antibodies by ELISA method was the gold standard. Results. - The sensitivity and specificity of TQS were respectively 93% and 94%, while the sensitivity and specificity of the clinical history were respectively 41% and 85%. Conclusions. - The TQS was considered well above the history to determine the immune status of patients. Its use in the prevention of tetanus is possible in emergency departments.
