摘要
John Campbell discusses observations made by researchers regarding the mold-filling process of a large hydro-turbine guide vane casting. He states that the authors can find an example of a steel backup roll weighing 50 t filled by direct contact with the ladle to avoid air entrainment. The authors of the research lack awareness about certain aspects of mold-filling process of a large hydro-turbine guide vane casting, despite making significant efforts. The lack of awareness by researchers is especially serious, as nearly all alloy developments are made in vacuum?induction furnaces, whose standard design ensures that the melt must fall a distance of at least 1 m into a mold.
