A hard transparent titania/silicone hybrid film with tunable refractive index was studied. The titanate coupling agent, Isopropyl tri(dioctylpyrophosphate) titanate(TTPO) and the silane coupling agent, trimethoxysilylpropylmethacrylate (TMSPM), were applied with tetrabutoxytitanate (TBOT) via sol-gel process to obtain a transparent stabilized titanium sol. gamma-glycidoxypropyl trimethoxysilane (GPTS) was prehydrolyzed as a silicone sol, and then reacted with titanium sol. A series of hybrid sols with different Ti content were prepared and applied for crack-free films by dip-coating. Different techniques including IR, UV-vis, SEM, AFM and auto-laser ellipsometer were used to characterize the films. With Ti molar fraction from 10% to 60%, the refractive index of the films increases from 1.50 to 1.76 at 633 nm. The pencil hardness is 7H similar to 9H and the contact angle is 94 degrees-100 degrees.
