In recent years, the rapid urbanization in peri-urban areas, with unique environmental and cultural landscape, has become a hot topic in different fields of study. The research on household waste generation and its relationship with community characteristics in peri-urban areas will improve the efficiency of community waste management. This paper researched Jimei district of Xiamen, China as an example, sampled different local communities, and used questionnaires to investigate the household waste generation in peri-urban areas. Results from the questionnaires showed that the average household waste production reached 0.39kg/d.capita. The household waste generation of different Jimei communities showed a down and up curve along the urban gradient. Further analysis revealed that family size and income were primary determinants of household waste generation, while the environmental awareness did not affect the waste generation behaviours as expected. Finally, the paper proposed suggestions on sustainable waste management in peri-urban areas. First suggestion is to make waste classification and recycling the highest priority in the management of solid waste. Second, suggestion is to focus on environmental education on direct waste generation. Third suggestion is to introduce a unit-based charging program
