Surgery for recurrent rectal carcinoma: The role of preoperative magnetic resonance imaging

Despite apparent curative resection of rectal carcinoma, local recurrence rates of between 3 and 32% have been reported. For those patients, radical surgical resection offers the only hope of cure. We present a review of the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings and contraindications to curative surgery demonstrated using imaging. (c) 2005 The Royal College of Radiologists.
