Analysis of the gas-sensing properties of maleate copolymer LB films for organic gas detection

The maleate copolymer (C(18)MA-VE2) was used as a sensitive material and deposited on a slide-glass substrate at room temperature by using the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) method. Current-time (I-t) measurements were performed to investigate the gas-detection properties of the sensitive LB films in the presence of organic gases, such as chloroform, acetone, ethanol, and methanol by using an apparatus for gas-detection measurement. Several interesting properties were observed, such as the sensitivity, the response time, the recovery time, and the reproducibility at room temperature. The response time was measured from 200 to 250 sec, the recovery time was measured from 30 to 80 sec, the sensitivity was measured a minimum of 7 times and a maximum 70 times, and the reproducibility at room temperature was measured by using the adsorption and penetration of the organic gases relative to a concentration of 100%. The maleate copolymer LB films were shown to have possible applications as a gas sensor.
