摘要
This paper has reviewed some aspects of learner autonomy and the role of the teacher in promoting learner autonomy. Techniques for promoting autonomy are included. In the Chinese education culture; there are some aspects that make promoting autonomy more difficult than in a Western world where all the autonomy research is done. Chinese students view their teachers as authority figures and never challenge their teachers' opinion. In order to manage this in the classroom, we have to realize that learning is not an end in itself; asking and thinking is a tool for communication, and communication is always about something. It is about discussing, creating and sharing.
