Pentachlorophenol (PCP) degradation by fungi was studied in submerged and solid-state cultures (SSC). SSC can be used in different bioremedation strategies. A strain of Rhizopus nigricans, isolated from a paper mill effluent, was studied to determine its PCP tolerance and degradation capacity in SSC. This fungus displayed a high tolerance to grow in the presence of PCP (up to 100 mg PCP l(-1)) and degraded 60% PCP in 24 h, at an initial concentration of 12.5 mg PCP l(-1) (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd.
