Optical Down-Conversion in Tb3+-Doped Zn-Chalcogenide Quantum Dots

Large quantities of ZnSe host nanocrystals have been synthesized by a low-cost synthetic chemical route and doped with rare earth (RE) terbium (Tb3+) ions. The resulting RE3+-doped nanocrystals show a complete broadband absorption below their band edge (400-440 nm) to the deep UV region and Tb3+ emission lines in the visible region under room temperature photoluminescence (PL) measurements were observed. Tb3+ energy transition peaks were visible under optical excitation below the band edge of the host ZnSe nanocryatals indicating energy transfer from host ZnSe nanocrystals to the rare earth Tb3+. Our results show for the first time that this novel earth-abundant, environment friendly, cadmium free RE3+-doped nanocrystals can be used as wavelength shifter and as an optical down-converter for enhanced solar spectral matching in solar cells and for various nanoscale optoelectronic device applications.
