A novel beta-diketone modified silica gel was synthesized by a simple reaction. The prepared material was characterized by diffuse reflectance FTIR spectroscopy and it was used for the adsorption of heave metal ions in the industrial waste water. The main parameters affecting the sorption of heavy metal ions, including pH, water flow rate, and elution, have been investigated in detail. Under the optimized operating conditions, most of the targeted heavy metal ions could be removed. The material could be simply regenerated by hydrochloric acid solution. The method is rapid, selective, economic and applicable to the removal of heavy metal ions from industrial waste water.
