Results about the use of lasers in monitoring pollutants in water and soil are reported, as follows: Tunable dye laser absorption spectrophotometry was used for organochlorurate pesticides (atrasine, propasine, simasine, etc.) measuring in water; detection limit 10(-3)-10(-4) ppm. Laser induced fluorescence (LIF) was applied to monitor organochlorurate pesticides in water, crude oil and oil components in water and soil; detection limits: 10(-1)-10(-2) ppm. The experimental set-up developed for pollutants monitoring in water and soil are described. Conclusions are drawn regarding the proper techniques for pesticides and oil detection in situ in water and soil. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
