The essay analyzes the conception of poverty in Machiavelli's works. The first part of the essay is devoted to the analysis of some passages of the Discorsi in which Machiavelli declares that the state must enrich the public treasury and must oppose the accumulation of private wealth, The second part is devoted to the analysis of Principe XVI, in which the reflection on poverty is connected to the drastic re -dimensioning of the virtue of liberality, very popular among the humanists of the fifteenth -century. Furthermore, the essay considers poverty in relation to the 'site' and 'war'. Finally, the essay analyzes some passages of the Istorie fiorentine in which poverty is examined in relation to some important events in the history of Florence.
