摘要
The symmetry-breaking phase transitions of the universe and of superfluid He-3 may lead to the formation of different states with different order parameters. In both cases the energy potential below the transition temperature has a complicated multidimensional profile with many local minima and saddle points, which correspond to different states. Consequently, not only topological defects, but also islands of different metastable states can be created. Using He-3 we can analyse the properties and experimental consequences of such transitions and, in particular, the first-order phase transition between the two low symmetry states.
