Research shows that firms' innovation performance can be moderated by firm size and ownership type. However, such moderating effects are not always supported by empirical studies. These combined research results indicate the complexity of the phenomenon. Based on the literature review and comparison of relative studies, this conceptual paper aims to identify the key reasons of the varied research results in terms of the effect of firm ownership and size on their innovation performance, and to develop propositions and areas for future research.
