摘要
This paper discusses a number of ways in which historical linguistics is now able to offer a more reliable, and perhaps more realistic, picture of past states of languages, thanks to the use of non-literary texts, the development of electronic resources such as corpora, and the increased tendency to see languages in their social and historical context. Examples of these developments are taken from the Romance languages.
