摘要
Melville described his Moby-Dick as a quest for truth, ensconced in a multi-genre novel. But what is the link between such a quest and writing style ? An examination of the internal philosophical references of the book will inform our view that its allegorical nature is best grasped in light of Melville's ambiguous relationship with idealism. Witness M. Levin's 1979 thesis, whereby Moby-Dick is an inversion of Plato's allegorical cave, suitably echoed by Hegel's "inverted world" in his Phenomenology of Spirit.
